AFROCENTRIC PRODUCTIONS

Multimedia Cultural Collecctive

Yellow Question mark who

FocalPoint Afrocentric Productions is a Black-owned multimedia cultural collective. We create and curate content about African American life, history, and culture, for education and entertainment. Our mission is to deliver quality programming that’s:

  • Authentic
  • Relatable, and
  • Meaningful

The term Afrocentric describes our platform and commitment to representing the true essence of our target audience across media platforms. According to a study conducted by the National Resource Group (NRG), two in three African Americans feel their stories are not represented on screen. Through our efforts, we intend to help with correcting that narrative and so much more.

Yellow Question mark why

As a collective team of like-minded creatives, we take pride in featuring a body of work that raises cultural awareness and promotes positive social change. We’re following in the footsteps of W. E. B. DuBois whose work transformed how our community is represented, especially in mainstream America. Recognized as one of the most important African American activists of the 20th century, DuBois was also an author, editor, educator, historian, Pan-Africanist, and sociologist.

W. E. B. DuBois

1868-1963

His book, the Souls of Black Folk contains several essays based on his personal experience, and position on race and religion.

The following sentence featured in this book has been quoted by many since it was published in 1903:

The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line.”

120 years later, this is also a problem of the twenty-first century –.A set of social, economic, or political barriers exists between different racial groups (collinsdictionary.com).

Launching this platform is a labor of love for Tammarrah Lee, our Founding Co-Creator. A second-generation Bostonian, accomplished educator, and history buff, her first-hand lived experience was a primary source of inspiration. She believes creating this platform as a multimedia cultural collective is key to successful project outcomes. She's also deeply committed to giving back to her community with a determination to make a positive difference. This has been the driving force throughout her entire career.

Bringing FocalPoint Afrocentric Productions to fruition is an honor and a blessing with passion and purpose.

FocalPoint Afrocentric Productions provides community-based project initiatives for our target audience that are aimed —to give voice to the voiceless and bridge the great divide. Our signature projects include:

  • Our Stories Ourselves (OSO) PhotoVoice Project - Self-paced photo storytelling activities, designed for documenting everyday people’s everyday lives, in the African American community. The premise is to provide a platform for shining a spotlight on lived experiences from a personal point of view and— through a cultural-focused lens.

  • African American (AFAM) Roots Series - A digital collection featuring resources and activities for documenting African American life, history, and culture. The aim is to promote better access to this information for knowledge and skill development.. As part of this effort, recorded webinars about topics relating to the scope of this series will also be available.

These types of initiatives matter and will generate substantial results. Our primary location is in the Roxbury area of Boston, Massachusetts, the homeland of the Massachusett and Pequot Tribes. Today, it's also known as the heart and soul of the African American community. More highlights about this culturally-rich neighborhood and historical milestones will be featured in upcoming presentations.

As African-descended people rooted in American soil for generations, we strive to infuse wisdom and teachings from the Motherland in our body of work. For starters, we paired a selection of West African Adinkra symbols and meanings (in translation), with our selected culture-centered life quotes and taglines for branding. Closely tied to the history, beliefs, and traditions of the Asante people, they’re aligned with our core values as media makers and culture keepers.
